Belonging Beyond Distance

We introduce the concept of relational continuity to explain how migrants and their descendants preserve deep-seated connections to their ancestral homelands despite physical separation. We argue that belonging is not defined by geographic location but by an active field of relationships maintained through memory, language, and cultural rituals. By drawing on transnational scholarship and Indigenous perspectives of “Country,” we demonstrate how homeland remains a vital part of a person’s identity across multiple generations. These connections are reinforced through family narratives and kinship obligations, ensuring that the social and spiritual worlds of the origin point persist even after displacement. Our research posits that migration is an ongoing process of transformation and renewal rather than a final severance from one’s roots.
