Near-Death Experiences as Developmental Integration Events

Research Focus

We explore near-death experiences (NDEs) through the lens of developmental systems theory, framing them as powerful events that trigger a reorganization of identity and meaning. Instead of debating the metaphysical origins of these events, we chose to focus on how recurring features like life reviews and feelings of unity act as catalysts for long-term personal transformation. These experiences often lead to enduring shifts in values, including a significant decrease in the fear of death and a heightened commitment to compassion and social service. By viewing NDEs as integration events, we suggest that previously fragmented aspects of a person’s life become synthesized into a more coherent and relational worldview. From our research we argue that the “return” from an NDE is a process of collective reintegration, where the individual’s internal changes manifest as a renewed dedication to contributing to the well-being of others.
