Toward a Dynamical Systems Theory of Purpose

We introduce a dynamical systems theory of purpose, arguing that a sense of purpose acts as a coherence-generating attractor that stabilizes human development over time. While traditional research focuses on individual motivation or life satisfaction, this framework explores how purpose functions as an organizing process that helps people and groups navigate periods of instability. We suggest that purpose provides a directional structure allowing for both persistence and adaptive transformation during major life transitions. By integrating complexity science and developmental theory, we explain how alignment across behavior, identity, and social participation emerges through self-organization. Additionally, we extend these principles to collective systems, illustrating how shared goals foster coordination and resilience within organizations. We advocate for a systems science approach to understand how purpose maintains long-range order across the human lifespan.
